Welcome to
the University of Bridgeport Financial Aid Page
One of the most important issues
confronting college applicants today is financing the cost of a college
education. Over the last two decades, while the costs of attending college has
been on the rise, federal financial aid has not.
Financial aid has become fundamental
with most students interested in pursuing a post-secondary education. Both private and
public institutions are faced with coming up with innovative ways to assist their students
in financing the cost of education. Typically, public schools receive funding from
their respective states which is earmarked for tuition reduction for resident
students. Private colleges and universities, although not state funded, have
endowments and institutional funds reserved for similar purposes.
In the 1998/99 academic year, the
University of Bridgeport committed $7.1 million of its institutional funds to finance a
wide array of grants and scholarships for our undergraduate students. These funds
were used to support academic, need based, merit, and athletic scholarships and
grants. Full-time, undergraduate, resident students who demonstrated
considerable need had financial aid packages that included $4,625 in student loans and
over $16,500 in grants, scholarships and work-study!
UB commits its own funds because we
feel that a quality university education should be an option for all students regardless
of their financial background. This philosophy is not anything new at UB, but rather a
commitment to our students that we have upheld throughout our history.
I hope you find this website both
informative and useful, and look forward to greeting you in the up and coming semester!
